He wanted others to feel these things, and from this, gained a love of writing. ![]() Bruce read books that made him shiver with terror, but also laugh, too. His love of reading began at a young age, when he would read many comic books, Tom Swift, Nancy Drew books, and the Hardy Boys. He finds that it is getting harder to write with each book he completes, because he does not want to repeat himself and also wants to make the currently thing he is writing to live up to something already completed. He was first published in the year 1977, and since then, has published well over hundred books. He realized that he was bisexual in his teenage years, while growing up, in what he called, farm country. His father was adopted by his aunt and he adopted her last name of Coville. Author Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York (where he lives) on and writes young adult fiction. ![]() ![]() A weekend getaway, somewhere to kick back with friends – and best of all, away from his accommodation in the barracks… yep, it could be an great “bro hangout”. When we met him in Sailor Proof, he came across as overbearing, cocky and insensitive and, like almost everyone else in his large family, he’s highly competitive – which is how come, at the beginning of the book, he’s driving to Mount Rainier to check out the cabin he won from a guy in a poker game. It’s a fairly low-angst story featuring two attractive and strongly-characterised leads in which the conflict is low-key but organic, arising from who these two people are and their respective situations in life.Ĭalder is currently on desk duty at the base following a head injury which resulted in a concussion, and he’s itching to get back to active duty on his submarine. ![]() The lead characters here are Naval Chief Calder Euler – brother of Arthur from the previous book – and a silver-fox doctor who is also a single parent to two little girls. ![]() Sink or Swim is the second in Annabeth Albert’s Shore Leave series, but you can easily jump in here without having read or listened to book one, Sailor Proof, as the stories are completely separate. Narrated by Greg Boudreaux and Joel Leslie ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Novik’s Temeraire novels, which rewrite the Napoleonic Wars for a world with an entire field of aviation built around dragons, or her standalone novels Uprooted and Spinning Silver, which build on existing fairy tales, 2020’s A Deadly Education and the new sequel The Last Graduate are as much works of scholarship as works of fantasy. But the big emotions of high school are still present, as a protagonist who isn’t her school’s Chosen One - she knows that guy, and thinks he’s annoying - tries to navigate a lethal environment where kids frequently murder each other for power, if monsters don’t get them first. Its sheer viciousness, its grim humor, and its complicated interpersonal politics are an immediate draw. But Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series, about kids at a preposterously deadly magical school, stands out in a ridiculously crowded field. At this point, so many books have been described as “Harry Potter, but for adults” that it’s easy to glaze over when the description comes up again. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This installment in the saga deals with gender issues and one of the great tragedies of British naval history: the loss of the Mary Rose. Edited for 2010 – this is STILL a favorite. I particularly love that there is a fireboat in the book since we often see those around here.
